A rapid geological and geohazard assessment was conducted on April 13, 2021 by the technical staff of this Office along with the personnel from PDRRO of Davao de Oro, MDRRMO New Bataan, and PENRO Davao de Oro. The activity was in response to the report of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of New Bataan regarding a massive landslide along a river in New Bataan on April 12, 2021. The Landslide material/talus presently blocked the channel of Batutu River which caused an artificial Damming.
Based on the result of the investigation, the mass movement was due the geology of the area and steepness of the slope and triggered by the consecutive heavy rainfalls prior the incident. Analysis of historical imagery from google earth suggests that the failure was reactivated translational slide while the channel of Batutu River is identified to have very high flood susceptibility as well as prone to debris flow.
Approximately 750 meters downstream is the location of the New Bataan mini hydroelectric generation facility of the Euro Hydro Power (Asia) Holdings, Inc. while further downstream, around 1.2 km from the facility is the nearest community to the landslide body.
It is recommended that pre-emptive evacuation be immediately done as well as excavation/clearing of talus to allow continuous overland flow and prevent water build-up. Moreover, operation of the hydroelectric power plant downstream is also advised to temporarily halt due to the presence of impending hazard.
