The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) last July 16 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the provincial government of Davao de Oro for the dredging, quarrying and rehabilitation of the Naboc River in Monkayo.
The MOA was signed by DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu, DILG Undersecretary for Operations Epimaco V. Densing III, Davao de Oro Provincial Governor Jayvee tyron L. Uy, DPWH-XI Regional Director Allan S. Borromeo and Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Eastern Mindanao and DENR-RXI Regional Executive Director Ruth M. Tawantawan.
The cleaning of the Naboc River has become one of the flagship projects of Secretary Cimatu after Pres. Duterte mentioned in his July 2017 SONA the worsening condition of the Naboc River due to indiscriminate dumping of wastes such as mercury, cyanide and even fecal coliform contamination.
On March 16-18, 2019 a cease and desist order was served to an estimated 1,800 ball mills and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) owners in Mt. Diwalwal, the objective of which is to transfer the informal settlers and the processing plants to Mabatas area to prevent further degradation of the environment in the area.
